Prior Learning--CALCampus
TYPES OF PRIOR LEARNING
COLLEGE LEARNING:
1. College/university courses. Undergraduate courses completed at other
colleges or universities are accepted with a passing grade. (If you
have already earned another degree, you may apply approved general
education credits from that degree towards this degree.) Request the
prior college/university to submit an OFFICIAL transcript to CALCampus.
2. Standardized tests for college credit.
College-Level Examination Program (CLEP)
DANTES - military
Excelsior College Examinations--formerly Regents College
Submit copies of your exam results to CALCampus.
HONORABLE MILITARY SERVICE
3. Military service. When verified by documents, a student may receive
credits for honorable military service. This is documented
through your submission of a copy of your DD 214.
NON-COLLEGIATE LEARNING:
ACE-approved non-collegiate institutions; specialized military training
4. Non-collegiate institutions and/or employment training programs that are
approved by the American Council on Education (ACE), or equivalent.
Submit copies of certificates or other documents to show evidence
of successful completion.
5. Specialized military training courses are evaluated, according to
ACE guidelines, and may be applied toward the major study area.
Submit copies of certificates or other documents to show evidence
of successful completion.
NON-COLLEGIATE LEARNING:
Other non-collegiate institutions (not approved by ACE);
and Independent learning.
6. Other non-collegiate institutions and employment training
that are not ACE approved, including workshops, seminars, job training,
and distance learning courses might qualify for credit.
You will be asked to submit a description of learning along with
learning methods used and proof of learning in the form of certificates,
diplomas, verification letters, catalogs with course descriptions, and
other verifications of learning. Prior CALC courses are accepted.
7. Independent non-institutional learning: You may have learned through
self-directed independent study or do not have documentary evidence
from an institution or employer to prove your learning. You may show
what you know in various ways, such as through writing a research
paper, developing an annotated bibliography of your subject-specific
readings, completing a final examination for a course, or
submitting other forms of media to show competency in a subject area
(i.e. a cassette tape of original musical compositions; a tape of
your speaking a second language accompanied by a written paper; a
video of your public speaking at a community or work event; or
copies of works that you have had published). You need to classify
your independent learning into course titles and course descriptions,
as the first step. Then, with help from your CALCampus advisor,
design a plan to show evidence of learning.
PROFESSIONAL LICENSES AND PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATES
8. A professional license or professional certificate program might
be approved for college credit. Submit documentation of these
professional licenses and certificates for evaluation.
